Since the pandemic closed our schools back in March, our focus at Salt River Elementary School has been "Fun is NOT Canceled." Health and wellness are always important components of a holistic education, and engaging students to take care of their minds and bodies is even more crucial these days.

Although students are stuck at home, we know their imaginations and capacity for fun are unlimited. With this in mind, the SRES Physical Education and Music & Movement teachers created video challenges for students and their families to participate with in both virtual and real environments. One challenge asked students to see how many times they could shuffle around cones - wearing shoeboxes on their feet! Another had students dancing like an elephant. Every challenge asked students to use whatever materials they had at home - there was no wrong way to do the challenge!

Families were encouraged to record their students completing the challenges and we received so many great videos! We saw amazing creativity, heart-pumping ingenuity, and smiles - LOTS of smiles! Our teachers may have guided students through the rules and movements of each challenge, but as we watched the videos families sent in, it became clear WE were the ones learning from our students how to overcome adversity and find joy in the little things.

We created this collage video for the Arizona Department of Education 2021 ESSA Conference, which was shown to a sold out (virtual) crowd on Feb. 23, 2021.

Have you tried these challenges?
